1. Hotel construction in Asia up
STR’s July 2017 Pipeline Report for Asia Pacific shows 626,535 rooms in 2,834 hotel projects under contract, representing a 7% increase in rooms under contract compared with July 2016. Three key markets reporting more than 5,000 rooms under construction include Shanghai, Jakarta and Chengdu.

3. Korea’s first lifestyle hotel-plex opens
Korea’s first “lifestyle hotel-plex,” Seoul Dragon City, will open 1 October, featuring four AccorHotels brands, 1,700 rooms, 11 restaurants and bars, 17 meeting rooms, two multi-function grand ballrooms, and a world first: four full floors of entertainment in a Sky Bridge suspended between two of the towers. Featuring four distinct AccorHotels brands ranging from luxury to economy, Seoul Dragon City will cater to every demographic.

4. Marriott enters JV with China’s Alibaba
Marriott has entered into a joint venture with Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, capitalising on the travel boom out of China which sees no signs of abatement. Chinese consumers will take 150 million trips — 15 million more than last year — and that number is expected to jump to 700 million trips over the next five years.

5. Australia’s Art Series Hotel Group acquired by Mantra
Mantra Group has acquired the Australian-owned Art Series Hotel Group for approximately $52.5 million (excluding transaction costs), subject to customary completion conditions.
The acquisition will see seven luxury hotels added to Mantra Group’s portfolio of 128 properties and more than 21,500 rooms in properties under management across Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and Hawaii.

6. Ascott makes new investment, now largest in Singapore
Ascott, with its recent investment of S$170.3 million, through its serviced residence global fund with Qatar Investment Authority in the serviced residence component of the Funan integrated development, has become the largest serviced residence operator in Singapore.

7. Digital travel sales in India booms
Digital travel sales in India will total $22.52 billion in 2017, up 33% over the previous year, according to eMarketer’s latest forecast on worldwide digital travel sales. Online travel agencies such as MakeMyTrip and Yatra have not only managed to overcome the impact of demonetization, but have also capitalized on the changes to the currency laws. As a result, consumers in India have embraced buying their travel tickets online.
