Seven trending hotel news stories that will impact your hotel Revenue Strategy.
1. Accor to open six APAC hotels in three months
AccorHotels recently opened its first Sofitel in Malaysia – the 312-room Sofitel Kuala Lumpur Damansara –the beginning of the group’s aggressive expansion plans of its luxury and upscale collection in Asia Pacific.
There are six confirmed openings of its Sofitel and Pullman brands in Asia in the next three months. The Kuala Lumpur hotel will be followed by the 223-room Sofitel Singapore City Centre in October, the 590-room Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour, 132- room Pullman Brisbane Airport and 129-room Sofitel Wellington (relaunch) – with the 317-room Pullman Shenyang Ginza (China) rounding up the group’s 2017 luxe expansion in APAC.

2. China soon to be Australia’s biggest source market
The Chinese tourists favour Australia as a tourist destination. The latest Overseas Arrival Data by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that China will soon be Australia’s biggest source market, overtaking Australia’s neighbour New Zealand. China has been recording double-digit growth in the number of visitors in the 12 months to July 2017.
There is also robust growth across Asia, with seven of its top 10 source markets coming from Asia with several recording double-digit growth – Japan (11.7%), South Korea (10.2%) and Hong Kong (10.1%).

3. Singapore hotel rates continue to decline
Singapore hotels continue to suffer a decline in ADR, sliding south for the 18th consecutive month, due primarily to economic struggles in the country, according to STR.
Occupancy rates in August however, showed improvement over the same period last year, due to a weak August last year amid concerns of a Zika virus outbreak in the region.

4. APAC hotel development pipeline up by double digits
Hotel development in Asia remains robust with more than half a million rooms being built currently.
STR’s August 2017 Pipeline Report shows 622,666 rooms in 2,818 hotel projects Under Contract in the Asia Pacific region, a 6.6% increase in rooms Under Contract compared with August 2016. Six countries reported more than 10,000 rooms in construction including China, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Australia.

5. Mantra opens another in Canberra
Canberra’s demand for more rooms was eased this September with the opening of the 176-room hotel in the city. Mantra MacArthur Hotel is the only new hotel to open in Canberra this year. With the opening of the 10-storey hotel, the Mantra Group would have just under 500 rooms across four hotels in Canberra.
Mantra Macarthur Hotel is rising from a A$19 million retrofit of a former office building. It features 136 rooms and 40 suites, a brand new Podilato restaurant and bar, a fully equipped gym, secure parking and Internet lounge.

6. Retail in Asia shows strong forecast; ecommerce represents $1.36 trillion
An expanding middle class and growing ecommerce activity has resulted in a strong forecast for retail spend in Asia. Retail sales is expected to increase 7.7% this year to $9.25 trillion. Of that, ecommerce will account for 14.7% to $1.365 trillion and by 2021, that number will more than double.
China is the largest contributor to Asia’s retail market, accounting for more than half of the region’s sales. However, retail sales growth will be fastest in India throughout the forecast period.

7. Survey reveals Asian travellers’ motivations choose non-hotel accommodation
Accommodating families and larger travelling groups, looking for cheaper options, and a desire for a more local travel experience are some motivations behind Asian travellers’ growing penchant for non-hotel accommodation (NHA) when travelling.
The recent study by Agoda – “Travel and Tech Study” – was based on a survey of 16,000+ respondents aged 18-64 across 15 countries. It also revealed that domestic Asian travellers are more likely to book homestays, but they also consider booking privately owned homes/apartments when travelling to neighbouring countries.
